Technically China is socialist, not communist, as there is no leader under communism, while socialism has a leader. That is the biggest issue with communism, as according to Marx, the only way to achieve it is to have a socialist leader willingly abdicate power.

Except the fundamental issue of no one is encouraged, or has any reason, to innovate. It doesn't even encourage people to do their job because they get paid regardless.

Why go and study for years to be a doctor, when you earn the same money as the guy flipping burgers at McDs?
